Dedicated to remarkable Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti, Piazzale Michelangelo was designed by the local architect Giuseppe Poggi and built in 1860. He is known for the creation of boulevards around the center of Florence, which together with Piazzale, were part of urban modernization project in late 19 th century. Replica of Michelangelo's David stands at the center of the square. Piazzale is the city's most popular viewpoint. The Piazzale is crowded most of the year. Tourists from all over the world come to take pictures from the magnificent balcony overlooking the city. Important landmarks like Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Vecchio, historic church San Miniato al Monte, can be seen from this point of view.
